You charge to 100% before bed, and by morning it is sitting at 60% — without you touching it. Or the phone drops ten per cent while you walk to work with it in your pocket. It is the kind of problem that feels like the battery is dying, when most of the time it is not.
Fast drain almost always comes down to one of four things: an app running in the background that should not be, the display, a weak mobile signal that keeps the modem working hard, or a battery that has genuinely aged out. This guide separates those four, and it does the diagnosis first — because changing settings blindly is how people spend a week on this and fix nothing.

Open Settings → Battery → Battery usage and look at the top of the list. If one app is far ahead of the rest and you barely opened it, that app is your problem — restrict it (Fix 2).
If the list looks normal and the drain is spread evenly, it is the screen, the signal, or the battery’s age. Check battery health early (Fix 9) so you do not spend hours tuning settings on a worn-out cell.
First, Match Your Pattern
The three patterns below need completely different fixes. Work out which one you have before you change a single setting.
Drains overnight while idle
Loses 20–40% between going to bed and waking up, with the screen off the whole time. This is a background process: an app, a sync, or location tracking.
Go to Fix 1, Fix 2 and Fix 3.
Drains fast while you use it
Screen-on time has collapsed — you used to get five or six hours, now you get two. The phone may feel warm. This is usually the display or the mobile signal.
Go to Fix 4, Fix 5 and Fix 6.
Percentage jumps, or it shuts down early
Drops from 30% straight to nothing, turns off at 20%, or jumps around while charging. That is not a settings problem — the battery has aged.
Go straight to Fix 9. Skip the rest.
One test that splits them: note the percentage, leave the phone untouched for four hours with the screen off, and check again. Losing more than about 3–5% in that time with nothing running points squarely at Pattern A.

The 10 Fixes
1Restart the phone and re-measure

Phones now run for weeks without a reboot. In that time a service can get stuck in a loop and keep the processor awake with the screen off — which is exactly what overnight drain looks like. A restart clears it, and just as importantly it gives you a clean baseline to measure against.
- Hold Power and choose Restart (not power off and on — restart is cleaner).
- Let it finish booting and leave it alone for five minutes.
- Note the exact percentage and the time.
- Do not touch it for four hours, then check again. Now you have a real idle-drain figure.
✅ Worked if: idle drain drops to a few per cent over four hours. If it stayed high, an app is running — go to Fix 2.
2Find and restrict the app that is doing it

This is the single most useful step in the guide. A badly behaved app can hold the CPU awake, sync continuously, and poll for location all night without ever showing you a notification. Android tracks exactly which app is responsible — most people simply never look.
- Go to
Settings → Battery → Battery usage. - Look at the list. You are looking for an app near the top that you barely used — not the one you spent two hours in.
- Tap it, then set Background usage or Battery to Restricted.
- Repeat for anything else that looks disproportionate.
- If an app you never open is still misbehaving after restricting it, uninstall it.
The usual culprits: social media apps with background refresh, free VPN apps, cloud backup running continuously, weather apps polling location, and — ironically — “battery optimiser” apps, which run constantly to tell you your battery is draining.
🟠 Do not restrict messaging, alarm, calendar or banking apps. Their notifications will stop arriving, or arrive hours late.
✅ Worked if: after a day, that app has dropped down the battery usage list and your idle drain is lower.
3Cut back location access

GPS is expensive to run, and “Allow all the time” means exactly that — the app can wake the location system while your phone sits on the bedside table. Most apps that hold this permission have no real need for it.
- Go to
Settings → Location → App permissions. - Look at everything listed under Allowed all the time.
- Change each one to Allow only while using the app, unless it genuinely needs background location — navigation, fitness tracking, and find-my-device are the real exceptions.
- Shopping apps, games, wallpaper apps, photo editors and social media almost never need it.
✅ Worked if: overnight drain improves and location stops appearing high in battery usage. Your privacy improves at the same time.
4Fix the display settings that cost the most

The screen is the largest single consumer on almost every phone, so this is where screen-on time is won or lost. Three settings do most of the damage: brightness held at maximum, a high refresh rate running all the time, and a long screen timeout.
- Turn on Adaptive brightness and stop overriding it to full.
- Set Screen timeout to 30 seconds. This one is nearly free and adds up all day.
- Drop the refresh rate from 120Hz to 60Hz, or set it to adaptive. On a phone with a heavy display this is the biggest single change here.
- If you have an OLED or AMOLED screen, use Dark mode — black pixels are switched off rather than lit.
🔵 Note: dark mode saves meaningful power on OLED and AMOLED only. On an LCD screen the backlight stays on regardless, so it changes almost nothing.
✅ Worked if: your screen-on time per charge goes up noticeably over the next couple of days.
5Turn off Always-On Display

Always-On Display keeps part of the screen lit whenever the phone is idle, which is most of the day. On AMOLED the cost is modest because only a few pixels are active, but it runs continuously and it is a common contributor to overnight drain.
- Go to
Settings → Lock screen → Always On Displayand switch it off. - If you want to keep it, use the scheduled option so it only runs during the day.
- Also enable the setting that disables it below a low battery level, if your phone offers one.
✅ Worked if: your overnight loss shrinks after the first night with it off.
6Stop a weak signal from draining the modem
HIGH IMPACT 2 MIN NO DATA LOSS
This is the most overlooked cause of the lot. When signal is weak, the radio increases transmit power and keeps hunting for a better cell. Unstable 5G is a particularly common trigger — the phone flips between 5G and 4G repeatedly, and every switch costs power. If your battery only dies badly at one location, this is almost certainly why.
- In a weak-5G area, set the network mode to 4G/LTE instead of 5G. Many people gain hours from this one change.
- Turn on Wi-Fi wherever you can — Wi-Fi uses far less power than a struggling mobile radio.
- Enable Wi-Fi calling if your carrier supports it, so calls stop leaning on a bad signal.
- In a basement or anywhere with no signal at all, use Aeroplane mode. Constantly searching for a network with none available is the worst case there is.
✅ Worked if: drain improves in the place it was worst, and “Mobile network standby” drops down the battery usage list.
7Use Battery Saver properly
MEDIUM IMPACT 1 MIN NO DATA LOSS
Battery Saver limits background work, syncing and animations. Most people leave it set to kick in at 5% or 10%, by which point it barely matters. Scheduling it earlier is where the benefit actually is.
- Go to
Settings → Battery → Battery Saver. - Set the schedule to turn on around 30–40% rather than at the very bottom.
- Keep Extreme Battery Saver for genuine emergencies — it cuts off most notifications.
✅ Worked if: the last third of the battery now lasts noticeably longer than it used to.
8Free up storage and update the system
MEDIUM IMPACT 10 MIN NO DATA LOSS
A nearly full phone works harder for everything it does, and that shows up as heat and drain. Separately, battery regressions are one of the most common things fixed in Android and app updates — if drain started recently, an update may already contain the fix.
- Aim to keep at least 15–20% of storage free:
Settings → Storage → Free up space. - Clear the cache for the heaviest apps — browser, video and social apps build up the most.
- Uninstall anything you have not opened in a couple of months. Every installed app carries background services.
- Update Android:
Settings → System → Software update, and update your apps in the Play Store.
🔵 If drain started immediately after a big update, give it two or three days before you judge it. Android re-indexes and re-optimises apps in the background after an update, and that work is temporary.
✅ Worked if: the phone runs cooler and drain settles once storage is freed and updates are installed.
9Check the battery’s real health

Every lithium-ion cell loses usable capacity as it ages. Past a certain point no setting will bring the runtime back, and the phone starts behaving strangely: it shuts down with charge apparently remaining, or the percentage jumps because the gauge can no longer predict the voltage curve. Check this before you spend a weekend tuning settings.
Signs the battery is the cause: it falls from 30% to zero in minutes, the phone switches off at 20%, charging is slower than it used to be, it runs warmer than it did, or the percentage jumps around.
- Samsung: Settings → Battery and device care → Battery → Battery health, or run the battery test in the Samsung Members app.
- Google Pixel (Android 14 and later): Settings → Battery → Battery health.
- Other phones: check under Settings → Battery for a health or battery-care section; a reputable battery-monitoring app can estimate capacity over a few cycles if your phone does not report it.
⚠ If the back panel or screen is lifting, the battery is swollen. Stop charging it and take it to a service centre. Do not press it back or try to open the phone.
✅ Answered if: health reads low, or the phone is three or more years old on its original battery. A replacement is your fix, and it usually restores most of the original runtime.
10Factory reset — last resort
LAST RESORT 30 MIN
If the battery reads healthy and nothing above has helped, a reset clears out corrupted settings and any background service you could not identify. It is a real fix for software-caused drain — and completely useless against a worn battery, which is why Fix 9 comes first.
⚠ This erases the phone. Back up photos and videos, save contacts, back up your chat apps, and make sure you know your Google account password before you start.
- Go to
Settings → System → Reset options → Erase all data (factory reset). - After it restarts, use it for a day before reinstalling everything, so you can see the clean baseline.
- Reinstall apps a few at a time rather than all at once — if drain returns, you will know roughly which batch caused it.
✅ Worked if: the clean system holds charge normally. If it still drains fast on a fresh install, it is the battery.

Charging Habits That Actually Matter
Once the drain is fixed, a few habits slow down how quickly you end up back here. Heat is the main enemy of a lithium-ion battery, far more than the number of times you plug it in. Fast charging itself is not the problem — modern phones manage it — but fast charging a hot phone, every single day, in a thick case, in direct sun, is.
Staying roughly between 20% and 80% is gentler than running it flat and then filling it to the top, which is why most phones now offer an optional charge limit or adaptive overnight charging. Turn that on if you have it. Beyond that: take a thick case off during fast charging, keep the phone out of direct sunlight while it charges, and use a charger and cable that meet your phone’s own standard rather than the cheapest one available. There is nothing else to it — battery “calibration” and “repair” apps cannot recover lost capacity, whatever they claim.
Mistakes That Waste Time
Installing a battery saver app. These run constantly in the background to monitor your battery, and several make drain measurably worse. Android’s own tools do the job better.
Force-closing apps from the recents screen all day. Android restarts them anyway, and cold-starting an app costs more power than leaving it suspended.
Changing ten settings at once. You will never know which one helped, and you will keep the annoying ones for nothing. Change one, wait a day, measure.
Judging a new update in the first day. Android re-optimises apps in the background after a major update, and drain settles within two or three days.
Tuning settings on a three-year-old battery. Check the health first (Fix 9). No setting brings back capacity that is gone.
The Order to Follow
- Restart and measure four hours of idle drain so you have a real number (Fix 1).
- Open Battery usage and restrict whatever is at the top that should not be (Fix 2).
- Then location permissions — the quiet background cost (Fix 3).
- Poor screen-on time? Refresh rate, brightness, timeout (Fix 4), then AOD (Fix 5).
- Bad only in certain places? That is the signal — drop to 4G, use Wi-Fi (Fix 6).

Why is my Android battery draining so fast all of a sudden?
