Your fan is howling like the laptop is rendering video, but every temperature reading says the CPU is sitting comfortably in the 40s. Nothing feels hot. Nothing looks busy. The noise still will not stop.
This is not a bug in your temperature reading. In almost every case the fan is responding to something the CPU sensor never sees — the GPU, the SSD, the charging circuit, a stuck fan controller, or a worn bearing. Below are nine checks in the order that actually resolves it, for both Windows laptops and MacBooks.
⚡ The Short Answer
Move the laptop onto a hard flat surface, then open Task Manager and sort by GPU and Disk instead of CPU. A background GPU or disk load with a cool CPU is the single most common cause. If the noise is grinding or rattling rather than just loud rushing air, the fan bearing is worn and no software setting will quiet it.
⚠ Do not open your laptop to replace thermal paste
Guides that tell you to lift the heatsink and reapply paste are giving you the highest-risk step first. On a machine whose CPU is already running cool, paste is almost never the cause. Opening the chassis can void your warranty, tear a ribbon cable, or crack a connector. Every fix below is done from the outside.
What Does The Noise Actually Sound Like?
Identify your pattern first — it tells you which fixes matter and which you can skip.
PATTERN A
Constant loud rushing air, never drops
Smooth wind noise at a steady high speed. Something is holding the fan at maximum. Start with Fix 2, then Fix 3 and Fix 4.
PATTERN B
Grinding, rattling, buzzing or clicking
Mechanical, not airy. This is debris in the blades or a dry bearing. Software will not fix it — go to Fix 7, then Fix 9.
PATTERN C
Ramps up and down every few seconds

1Put It On A Hard Flat Surface

Almost every laptop pulls air from underneath. A bed, cushion, blanket or even a thick rug seals those intakes shut. The CPU can stay cool because the fan is spinning flat out to compensate — which is exactly the symptom you are describing.
- Lift the laptop onto a desk, table or any rigid flat surface
- Check that nothing is resting against the side or rear vents
- Leave it for two minutes and listen
Verify: if the fan steps down within a minute or two, that was the cause. A hard tray or laptop stand is enough — you do not need a powered cooling pad.
2Find The Real Load — Look At GPU And Disk, Not CPU

This is the whole point people miss. The fan does not only follow the CPU. It follows the hottest sensor in the machine, and the GPU, SSD and charging circuit all have their own. A cool CPU next to a busy GPU produces exactly this noise.
On Windows 10 and 11
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager
- Go to Processes and click the GPU column header to sort by it
- Do the same for Disk, then for Memory
- Note anything sitting above a few percent while the machine is supposedly idle
- Open the Performance tab and watch Disk activity for a minute — a search indexer or backup can run flat out with almost no CPU cost
On macOS
- Open Activity Monitor from Spotlight
- Check the GPU tab, then Disk, then Energy
- In the Energy tab look at the 12 hr Power column to catch apps that spike when you are not watching
Verify: quit the heaviest offender and wait 60 seconds. If the fan drops, you found it. Common culprits are browser tabs with video or hardware acceleration, cloud sync clients finishing a large upload, a system search index rebuild after an update, and screen-recording or video-call software left running in the background.
3Switch Out Of Performance Power Mode

In performance mode many laptops run the fan pre-emptively so the chip never has to slow down. Temperatures stay low precisely because the fan is loud. Dropping to balanced usually costs you nothing you can feel.
Windows 11
- Open Settings → System → Power & battery
- Set Power mode to Balanced
Windows 10
- Open Control Panel → Hardware and Sound → Power Options
- Select Balanced
- Click Change plan settings → Change advanced power settings
- Expand Processor power management → System cooling policy and set it to Passive on battery
If your laptop came with a manufacturer control app, open it and switch the thermal or performance profile from any turbo or gaming setting back to balanced or quiet. Setting it in Windows alone is not always enough — the vendor profile can override it.
MacBook
Open System Settings → Battery and make sure High Power Mode is off (it appears only on some models). Also turn off Low Power Mode and back on once — on several models this re-reads the thermal profile.
Verify: the fan should settle within a minute of the change.
4Do A Full Shutdown To Reset The Fan Controller

The small controller that drives the fan can latch at full speed after a sleep cycle, a crashed driver or an interrupted update. It stays stuck until power is properly cut — and on Windows a normal “Shut down” does not cut it, because Fast Startup only hibernates.
Windows
- Hold Shift and click Restart from the Start menu — this bypasses Fast Startup
- When the blue menu appears, choose Turn off your PC
- Unplug the charger, wait 30 seconds, plug back in and power on
To stop it recurring, disable Fast Startup: Control Panel → Power Options → Choose what the power buttons do → Change settings that are currently unavailable, then untick Turn on fast startup.
MacBook — Apple Silicon (M1, M2, M3, M4)
Shut down from the Apple menu, wait 30 seconds, then press the power button once. There is no SMC to reset on these models — a full shutdown does the same job. Ignore any guide that tells you otherwise.
MacBook — Intel
Shut down, then hold Shift + Control + Option (left side) together with the power button for 10 seconds. Release everything, wait 5 seconds, then power on normally.
Verify: if this was the cause the fan is quiet from the moment the desktop appears.
5Update Firmware And Chipset Drivers

Fan behaviour is decided by firmware. Manufacturers regularly ship BIOS/UEFI updates specifically to fix fans that ramp too early — if your noise started after a Windows update or a repair, this is very often the cure.
Windows
- Run Windows Update fully, including Optional updates → Driver updates
- Find your exact model number (it is on the sticker underneath or in msinfo32)
- Go to your manufacturer’s official support page for that model and download the latest BIOS/UEFI, chipset and power/thermal management drivers
- Keep the laptop plugged in for the whole BIOS update and do not close the lid
⚠ A BIOS update must never be interrupted. Charger connected, no sleep, no forced restart. Only ever use the file from your manufacturer’s own support page for your exact model.
MacBook
Open System Settings → General → Software Update and install everything pending. macOS updates the firmware itself as part of that process — there is no separate firmware or SMC download for Macs, and any site offering one should not be trusted.
Verify: restart and listen at idle for five minutes.
6Reset The Fan Profile In BIOS/UEFI

If someone once set an aggressive fan curve, or a firmware update left a stale profile behind, restoring defaults fixes it in one step. This applies to Windows laptops only — MacBooks have no user-accessible fan settings.
- Restart and press the setup key as the logo appears — usually F2, F10, Del or Esc depending on the maker
- Find a section named Hardware Monitor, Thermal, Fan Control or Advanced
- Set the fan mode to Balanced, Standard or Quiet — not Performance or Full Speed
- If nothing looks obviously wrong, use Load Setup Defaults / Restore Defaults instead
- Save and exit
Never set a fan to a fixed low speed or switch it off. A quiet laptop that silently cooks its own board is a far worse problem than noise. Balanced is as low as you should go.
Verify: boot into Windows and listen at idle. If the noise is gone in BIOS but returns in Windows, your cause is software — go back to Fix 2 and Fix 3.
7Clear Dust — From The Outside Only

A blocked exhaust makes the fan spin faster for the same airflow, and dust or hair caught in the blades causes rattling and buzzing. You can clear most of it without removing a single screw.
- Shut down completely and unplug the charger
- Take a can of compressed air and hold it upright, nozzle about 3–5 cm away
- Use short bursts into the exhaust vent, then into the intake grilles underneath
- Wipe loosened dust off the outside with a dry microfibre cloth
- Power on and listen
⚠ Three things not to do
- Do not use a vacuum cleaner — it can build a static charge against the board
- Do not let the fan spin freely in the airstream — over-spinning damages the bearing, which is the exact fault you are trying to avoid. Hold the blades still with a plastic toothpick, or use very short bursts
- Do not tilt the can — tilted cans spray liquid propellant inside

8Rule Out Hidden Mining Malware

Crypto-mining scripts are written to hide. Many throttle themselves the moment you open Task Manager, and most target the GPU rather than the CPU — which is why the CPU looks innocent while the fan screams.
Windows
- Open Windows Security → Virus & threat protection
- Choose Scan options → Full scan and start it
- Then run Microsoft Defender Offline scan from the same menu — it restarts the PC and scans before Windows loads, which is how it catches things that hide from a normal scan
- Check your browser extensions and remove anything you did not install yourself
macOS
- Open System Settings → General → Login Items & Extensions and remove anything unfamiliar
- In Safari or your browser, delete every extension you do not recognise
- Restart and watch the Activity Monitor GPU tab for a few minutes
Windows Security and the built-in macOS protections are enough for this check. You do not need to install an extra scanner, and “fan optimiser” or “PC cleaner” downloads are a common source of exactly this problem.
Verify: after cleanup, restart and watch GPU usage at idle for five minutes. It should sit near zero.
9Replace A Worn Fan

This is the cause almost every other guide leaves out. Laptop fans use tiny sleeve bearings that dry out after a few years. A worn bearing is loud at every speed, which is precisely why the noise does not match the temperature. No setting, driver or firmware update can quiet it.
Signs the fan itself has failed
- Grinding, buzzing or clicking rather than smooth rushing air
- Noise changes when you tilt or gently move the laptop
- Loud from the second you power on, before anything has loaded
- Fixes 1 through 8 made no difference at all
Take it to an authorised service centre, or if the machine is out of warranty, any competent repair shop. Fan assemblies are inexpensive and it is a routine job. Give them your exact model number so the correct part is ordered before you arrive.

Mistakes To Avoid
- Reapplying thermal paste on a laptop that already runs cool. Highest risk, lowest chance of helping. If your temperatures are normal, paste is not your problem.
- Forcing the fan to a fixed low RPM. You trade noise for long-term heat damage.
- Judging by CPU temperature alone. Check GPU, disk and battery temperatures too — the fan does.
- Vacuuming the vents. Static risk, and it pulls dust deeper in.
- Installing a “fan control” utility from a random download site. A frequent source of the exact background load causing the noise.
- Ignoring grinding sounds for months. A seizing fan eventually stops, and then you get real overheating and shutdowns.
The Order To Follow
- Move it onto a hard flat surface and wait two minutes
- Sort Task Manager or Activity Monitor by GPU, then Disk
- Switch to balanced power mode, including in any vendor app
- Do a real full shutdown and unplug for 30 seconds
- Install firmware and chipset updates
- Restore default fan settings in BIOS/UEFI

Why is my laptop fan loud when the CPU temperature is normal?
Because the fan is not controlled by CPU temperature alone. It responds to the hottest sensor in the machine, which may be the GPU, the SSD, the battery or the charging circuit. A blocked air intake or a stuck fan controller produces the same result.
Is a loud fan damaging my laptop?
The noise itself is not damaging. Running at maximum speed constantly does shorten the fan’s life, and a grinding fan is already failing — that one should be replaced before it stops completely.
Should I replace the thermal paste?
Not for this symptom. Dried paste raises temperatures; your temperatures are normal. Opening the chassis risks damage and your warranty for no likely benefit. Leave it unless a technician has confirmed a genuine thermal problem.
Can I just turn the fan off to make it quiet?
