Your iPhone used to comfortably last all day. Now it is at 30% by lunchtime, and you are already pricing up a battery replacement. Hold off on that for ten minutes, because fast drain is far more often a settings problem than a hardware one.
Three settings account for most unexplained drain on iPhone: Background App Refresh, Location Services left on Always, and Push email. All three can be changed in under ten minutes, and nothing is deleted. The useful part is that iOS hands you the diagnostic data to prove which one it is — so this guide checks that first, then works through nine fixes in order of impact.

First, Match Your Pattern
Fast drain shows up in three distinct ways on iPhone, and each one needs a different starting point. Pick the one that matches what you are actually seeing.
Sudden drain right after an iOS update
Battery was fine, an update installed, and now it is severe. This very often settles by itself once post-update indexing finishes.
Wait 48 hours first, using Fix 6 to get through the day. Then Fix 8.
Gradual decline over months or years
Same usage, steadily worse battery life, and noticeably worse in cold weather. This is the pattern that genuinely points at the cells.
Start at Fix 1 and read Maximum Capacity before anything else.
One app is clearly eating the battery
Battery is fine most of the time, but one app — usually social, fitness or mapping — sits at the top of the usage list with heavy background time.
Go to Fix 7, then Fix 2 and Fix 3 for that app.

1Check battery health and usage stats
DO THIS FIRST 2 MIN NO DATA LOSS
Two minutes here saves you a weekend of changing settings that were never the problem. You need to know whether the cells have physically degraded, and which app is actually consuming the power.
Battery health
Go to Settings → Battery → Battery Health & Charging and read Maximum Capacity.
- 100–85% — the battery is not your problem. A setting is.
- 84–80% — some reduction in all-day life is normal. The fixes below will still help.
- 79% and below — this is Apple’s stated replacement threshold. A replacement is the real fix.
- “Service” message — health cannot be verified. Get it checked.
Battery usage by app
- Go to
Settings → Batteryand scroll to Battery Usage by App. - Check Last 24 Hours and Last 10 Days. A one-off spike looks completely different from a consistent offender.
- Tap any app to see the split between On Screen and Background time.
- Anything with significant Background time is using battery you never see.
✅ Done when: you know two things — whether the battery needs replacing, and which app is your top drain source.
2Disable Background App Refresh
HIGH IMPACT 2 MIN NO DATA LOSS
Background App Refresh lets every app wake up on its own, hit the network and check for new content while you are doing something else entirely. A fitness app refreshing repeatedly, a social app fetching posts and a news app pulling articles are all using the processor and the radio at once, invisibly. Turning this off globally is frequently the single biggest improvement available.
Turn it off globally (recommended)
- Go to
Settings → General → Background App Refresh. - Tap Background App Refresh at the top of the list.
- Select Off.
Or do it selectively
Leave the master toggle on Wi-Fi, then switch it off individually for social apps, news apps (they refresh when you open them anyway), shopping apps, games, and anything that showed heavy background time in Fix 1.
🔵 Keep it on for: navigation apps if you rely on live traffic, music and podcast apps if you want episodes pre-downloaded, and anything whose widget needs live data. Everything else can be off.
✅ Worked if: after 24 hours, background time for those apps in Battery Usage is zero or close to it.
3Audit Location Services
HIGH IMPACT 5 MIN NO DATA LOSS
The GPS radio is one of the most power-hungry parts of the phone. Every app set to Always can track your position continuously, including while the phone is in your pocket doing nothing. A single fitness, weather or social app left on Always is one of the most common causes of drain that looks completely unexplained.
- Go to
Settings → Privacy & Security → Location Services. - Scroll the whole list looking for anything set to Always.
- Ask, for each one, whether it genuinely needs constant access.
- Maps and navigation: While Using the App is enough.
- Fitness and health trackers: While Using the App, unless automatic workout detection really matters to you.
- Weather apps: While Using the App — location is fetched when you open them.
- Social media: Never. There is no real user benefit to Always here.
- Food delivery: While Using the App. Shopping apps: Never.
Then check System Services
Scroll to the bottom of Location Services and tap System Services. Turn off Location-Based Apple Ads and Location-Based Suggestions. You can also turn off Significant Locations, unless you use Memories in Photos.
✅ Worked if: those apps stop showing meaningful background usage, and the percentage falls more slowly during the same activities.
4Brightness, Auto-Brightness and Dark Mode
HIGH IMPACT 2 MIN NO DATA LOSS
The display is the largest single consumer in normal daily use, and brightness has a direct effect on how much it draws. Auto-Brightness keeps the screen at the lowest usable level for your surroundings without you thinking about it, which is where most of the saving comes from indoors.
- Turn on Auto-Brightness:
Settings → Accessibility → Display & Text Size, scroll to the bottom. - Lower manual brightness: swipe down from the top-right for Control Centre and drag the slider to a comfortable indoor level. Outdoors, let Auto-Brightness raise it.
- Use Dark Mode on OLED iPhones:
Settings → Display & Brightness → Dark. On OLED, iPhone X and later, black pixels draw close to no power, so a dark theme and a true-black wallpaper genuinely help. - Shorten Auto-Lock:
Settings → Display & Brightness → Auto-Lock → 30 Seconds.
✅ Worked if: the share of battery attributed to screen-on time drops for a comparable amount of use.
5Switch Push email to Fetch
HIGH IMPACT 3 MIN NO DATA LOSS
Push email holds a permanent connection open between your iPhone and the mail server, and every incoming message wakes the processor and the radio immediately. With several accounts configured that is a lot of wake events a day for messages you will read hours later anyway.
- Go to
Settings → Mail → Accounts → Fetch New Data. - Turn Push off at the top.
- Under Fetch, choose Every 30 Minutes, or Hourly for more saving.
- Check each individual account below and confirm it is on Fetch, not Push.
🔵 Keep Push for one account only if you genuinely rely on time-critical email. Everything else — personal mail, newsletters, promotions — is fine on Fetch.
iCloud Mail is the exception. Apple’s own push implementation is more power-efficient than most third-party ones, so leaving it on for iCloud specifically is a reasonable trade-off. Turn it off for Gmail, Outlook and Yahoo instead.
✅ Worked if: Mail’s share in Battery Usage drops noticeably. Expect messages up to 30 minutes later — that is the trade-off.
6Use Low Power Mode
QUICK WIN 30 SEC NO DATA LOSS
Low Power Mode is the fastest way to stretch what is left. It cuts back Background App Refresh, lowers brightness, pauses automatic mail fetch, holds off background iCloud Photos sync, reduces visual effects and eases back CPU performance slightly. Nothing is deleted and it reverses with one tap.
Settings → Battery → Low Power Mode→ toggle on.- Or tap the battery icon in Control Centre, if you have added it.
- Or ask Siri to turn on Low Power Mode.
To add it for one-tap access: Settings → Control Centre, find Low Power Mode, add it.
🟠 iOS switches it off automatically at 80% charge. If you are waiting on a battery replacement and want it on permanently, you will need to re-enable it after each charge.
✅ Worked if: the battery icon in the status bar turns yellow and the remaining charge lasts visibly longer.
7Identify and restrict draining apps
HIGH IMPACT 5 MIN NO DATA LOSS
This is Fix 1’s data turned into action. Any app showing substantial background usage during a period when you were not using it is quietly draining your battery, and what you do about it depends on how much you need the app.
- An app you use regularly: turn off its Background App Refresh individually.
- An app you use occasionally with high background time: close it after each use and disable its background refresh.
- An app you rarely open that still uses battery: delete it.
Settings → General → iPhone Storage→ select the app → Delete App. - An app consistently in your top three over 10 days: check the App Store for an update — a battery bug in that version may already be patched.
The categories that come up most: short-video apps that preload content, social apps combining background location with data sync, always-on VPN clients, third-party keyboards that sync, and wallet apps that sync continuously.
✅ Worked if: after 24 to 48 hours those apps show near-zero background time and daily consumption is measurably lower.
8Update iOS and all apps
MEDIUM IMPACT 30 MIN NO DATA LOSS
iOS updates regularly include battery optimisations and patches for known high-drain bugs in system frameworks, and Apple has shipped point releases specifically to fix battery regressions. App updates do the same at the app level. Staying current means every known fix is already applied.
- Go to
Settings → General → Software Update. - Tap Download and Install if an update is available, and keep the phone plugged in.
- Then open the App Store, tap your profile icon, scroll to pending updates and tap Update All.
🟠 Heavy drain for a day or two after a major update is normal. iOS re-indexes Spotlight, re-analyses your Photos library and re-syncs iCloud all at once. Do not judge a new iOS version’s battery life in the first 48 hours.
✅ Worked if: 48 hours later, at the same time of day, the percentage is higher and system processes no longer dominate Battery Usage.
9Reset All Settings — last resort
LAST RESORT 10 MIN
Reset All Settings clears every iOS configuration on the phone. It does not delete your files, but it is not a free step either. Its purpose is to resolve drain caused by settings that have become corrupted across multiple iOS updates, and it is the last software option before concluding the battery itself is the problem.
⚠ What this clears: all saved Wi-Fi passwords, Bluetooth pairings, Face ID configuration, Apple Pay cards, VPN configurations, and every custom notification, display, privacy and keyboard setting. Have your Wi-Fi passwords to hand before you start.
What it does not delete: photos, videos, contacts, messages, apps, music, downloads or iCloud data.
- Go to
Settings → General → Transfer or Reset iPhone → Reset → Reset All Settings. - Enter your passcode and confirm. The iPhone restarts.
- Reconnect Wi-Fi, re-pair Bluetooth devices, re-enrol Face ID, re-add Apple Pay cards.
- Use the phone normally for 48 hours before judging the result.
If this does not fix it
Then it is the battery, and no software change will help. Your options are an Apple Store or Apple Authorised Service Provider appointment, Apple’s mail-in repair service, or an independent shop. Check Apple’s current battery service pricing for your specific model before booking, since it varies by model and region.
🔵 One note on independent repairs: a non-Apple battery in a newer iPhone can trigger an “Unknown Part” notice under Settings → General → About. It still works, but be aware of it before choosing purely on price.
✅ Answered if: 48 hours after the reset nothing improved and Maximum Capacity is below 80%. That is your diagnosis — hardware, not software.

Mistakes That Waste Time
Swiping apps closed from the App Switcher all day. iOS suspends background apps already. Force-quitting means the app has to cold-start next time, which costs more power, not less.
Booking a battery replacement before reading Maximum Capacity. If it is above 85%, the battery is not your problem and you will pay for nothing.
Judging a new iOS version on day one. Post-update indexing makes drain look catastrophic for 24 to 48 hours, then it settles.
Changing eight settings in one afternoon. You will never know which one worked, and you will live with the annoying ones forever. Change one, wait a day, check Battery Usage.
Running Reset All Settings early. It is genuinely useful, but it wipes Wi-Fi passwords, Face ID and Apple Pay. It belongs at the end, not the beginning.
The Order to Follow
- Always start with Fix 1. Read Maximum Capacity. Below 80% means a replacement is coming, and settings can help but cannot compensate for worn cells.
- Then the big three, about ten minutes total: Fix 2 (Background App Refresh off), Fix 3 (Location Services audit), Fix 5 (Push to Fetch).
- Drain started after an update (Pattern A)? Wait 48 hours, use Fix 6 to get through the day, then Fix 8.
- One app clearly the culprit (Pattern C)? Fix 7, and restrict that app specifically.

FAQ
Why is my iPhone battery draining fast after an iOS update?
After a major update, iOS re-indexes Spotlight, re-analyses your Photos library and re-syncs iCloud all at once, which causes heavy drain for roughly 24 to 48 hours before settling. Does Low Power Mode slow the iPhone down?
